Pop the Cork #1: Cork Gets Weird

As I write this, we are mere hours away from the announcement of Weird Al’s “Mandatory Fun” world tour, and it got me thinking about how much he has meant to me and a lot of my friends growing up. Weird Al has such a distinctive sound that is easily recognizable, and literally everybody I ask has a favorite song of his. If I had to pick my top three favorites they would probably have to be “Yoda”, “Amish Paradise”, and “White and Nerdy”. Yoda makes the cut because who doesn’t love Star Wars? The song it was based on “Lola” is also one of my karaoke go-to songs. Amish Paradise was my gateway drug into 90s rap and hip-hop. If it wasn’t for Weird Al’s cover, I would have never checked out “Gangster’s Paradise” and wandered down the rabbit hole that is now one of my musical guilty pleasures. Now I remember when the music video for White and Nerdy first aired on “MTV”, and it was the only song any of my friends in high school were quoting for months on end. I would listen to that song on repeat until my ears would bleed and will never forget when he performed it live at the Puyallup Fair.

Feel free to share your favorite Weird Al song/memory to @thebuzzkgrg on Twitter or facebook.com/thebuzzkgrg (#GetWeird). Here’s to hoping he’ll come through our neck of the woods!
